Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters
A recent study indicates that people who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a leading health publication points out that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People using such medications should be cognizant of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a return to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The study, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically have a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Doctors propose the way of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified regain.
These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this medication means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Issue?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Testimonies
People who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you become starving," recalled an individual.
The struggle is worsened if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Growing Use
Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among females than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians caution that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
